This past weekend was the Silver State Nitro Challenge held at RC Tracks of Las Vegas in Las Vegas, NV. The layout was fun and a bit challenging at times, tire choice and shock package was a constant challenge because of the cool temps in the morning and evening and the hot temps in the afternoon. Watering seemed fairly consistent but the wind and the heat had a dramatic effect on how quickly the track would dry out.
I was able to tq one round each of Ebuggy, truck and nitro buggy, with my other points I would be starting 2nd on the grid in each class.
The ebuggy main was up first on Sunday, my car felt really good for the start of the race but I made a mistake early on that was totally my fault and with the train of cars coming behind me the marshall really didn’t have a chance to get out to flip me before most of the field went by and from there I really didn’t have a chance to make up the ground and I finished a disappointing 8th place.
Next up was Nitro Truggy, with Ryan Maifield in front of me and Ryan Lutz behind me I know that I would be in for a battle. Lutz pushed hard from the beginning of the race but made a mistake early on which allowed Maifield and myself to pull away from the field a bit, we battle back and forth swapping the lead a few times. About half way through the race Maifield flamed coming out of the pits and this gave me a little breathing room but not for long as Lutz was charging hard, it seemed that he may have had more grip than I did and I just couldn’t push any harder, I was able to stay ahead of Maifield and get by for the extra lap and I took second.
In the Buggy main, Dakotah was starting first and Maifield starting behind me I know it would be a very fast paced race. The 3 of us got off to a good start and pulled away a little bit before Dakotah would have a mistake on lap 5 and allow myself and Maifield to go by, we would swap positions a couple of times, I was following Maifield on the hip jump just after the bricks, he clipped the pipe and I got collected with him, which allowed Dakotah to catch up and take the lead, with Maifield and I swapping positions behind Phend until something broke on his car and he was out of the race with 7 minutes to go, Maifield and I would move up to the 1st and 2nd positions where we would finish.
It was great to see 3 Xray’s in both the Pro buggy and Pro Truggy mains. I would also like to congratulate Justin Wheeler on winning the Open Buggy main and finishing 3rd in the Open Truggy main.
